You know how much Janeites love new adaptations of their beloved P & P, right? Well actually I don’t know if they love them or not, but as a fan of a few adaptations (okay they were just the movie versions, but still I loved them) myself I am always a bit leery. Will it be like the original? Too much like the original? Too far from the original? Aack, why bother. But I always know that I’ll end up taking a peek and I’m so glad I checked out Eligible. It’s fresh yet familiar and it hits all the most relevant pop culture notes but staying faithful to the original. Don’t let the word count dissuade you (it’s a doozy) it is a fast read that flows effortlessly. All the recognizable characters are there. Mrs. Bennett is still offensive, and the Misses Bennett’s are still obnoxious, and Liz and Darcy are at their hearts quintessential Austen. I enjoyed this retelling and even if you know what’s coming you can still appreciate the banter, the monkey business, and all the Bennetts.
